The numbers coming in from Flexera’s “2021 Sate of the Cloud Report” show that among the 750 global cloud decision makers who contributed to the report, cloud computing adoption rates have shot through the roof. The move to the cloud, it seems, was influenced by the pandemic.
According to the report, which you might remember in its former name as the “RightScale State of the Cloud Report”, 29% of the respondents said they spent significantly higher than planned on cloud usage. Just over 60% said they had spent “slightly” higher than planned.
The multicloud is also addressed in the report: 78% said they use a mix of public and private platforms. Only 2% say they solely use private cloud, and 19% use public cloud exclusively.
Deployment Success
There are a number of factors to consider before deploying a public, private, or multicloud environment, and this is something in which too many organizations fail to invest energy – thus the many horror stories about failed deployments. This is especially true when the move to the cloud is in the multicloud environment.
Mistake number one is to try to utilize a siloed platform as you build a multicloud solution. For example, operational tools, various security tools, and governance procedures are all siloed, which results in a complex situation where cloud operations teams are tasked with far too many difficult scenarios. To avoid this situation, find common tools that have been proven to work across all types of cloud environments.
Make Wise Choices
Developing the multicloud environment comes with a slew of important decisions. Don’t make the situation more complex than it has to be, which is what happens when net-new cloud services are selected, which only increase risk, cost, and complexity.
You’ll need to select security services, databases, and application development tools that aren’t redundant and don’t pile on the complexity factor. Ideally, you’ll be able to choose all the industry-leading tools you need to make your platform a success, but keep in mind that you might have some redundancy to account for on the back end.
